http://thriller11group27.blogspot.com/2011/04/question-8.htmlWe learnt over the past few weeks on how to master the techniques and how to use livetext, finalcut pro and soundtrack pro.
Our prelim was was what was expected of us, a few basic angles such as reverse shots and cut-scenes and a basic soundtrack. This was because we had not managed to cover what we were going to learn about the programs of editing.
The angles of our prelim wasnt quite right as we left too much space above my head, this wasnt the right thing to do because a typical shot should have the character in three quarters of the frame. however it was only a few weeks into the media course, thus we didnt know how to film in a professional manner.
However in the final edit of shatter, we put all our skills together to create a masterpiece. Our final film included all our skills which we learnt. This means we added titles using livetext, sound using soundtrack pro and the cutscenes using final cut.
both our unskilled prelim and our skilled final film are below...see the difference for yourself!

Evaluation Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?
Our preliminary film was that not bad as we used the basic shot types, that we manages to use a couple of match cut shot and shot revere shot that was all, however we still needed to work on making them look a lot better as possible.
We needed to work on the framing of this shot, because the top of abid's head there is alot of space, which is not good in filming because it is hard for the audience to focus on the character. although this was our first time proper filming a short clip it was quite not easy to do. :)
We used shot reverse shot to show the conversation between the two characters. although there is still alot of space in between the screen and the character but however we managed to used the camera position well in our final movie.
As you can see we have improved our camera position by placing the character and able to fit him in the screen. So there show a big improvement of our success.
We really liked the title of our film, as it was very clear and simple. However it stands out because it is so plain, and it is more traditional and quite formal. Furthermore in our Preliminary we did not use any title or text because we didn't have enough time to do it.
This Medium shot or Two shot of these character are there for a reason because it is for the audience to see the victim in a vulnerable situation and that he doesn't know it yet but the audience does. We thought that this would be slightly creepy, thus reinforcing the genre of our film.
The close up of the eyes is effective as it shows emotions and can make the film more scary, we decided on this because in our preliminary we missed it out therefore we wanted to improve and show the raw emotion of the character.
We wanted to have a the victim on the floor with the blood coming out of his mouth to present us with what is happening and it has more of a thrilling effect as it is quite mysterious. I took this idea from the movie "bloodsport 1988" on tv a couple of weeks before making this movie. It may not be a thriller, but it still worked to create suspense for the audience as we were unaware what was going to happen. |
In this photo it show the character falling with blood coming out but we wanted to use a lot more blood to show more dramatic in our thriller. (This was bloodsport 1988)
Question 8
Evaluation Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?
Below is our preliminary movie.
As you can clearly see our latest movie is much more better compared to our preliminary movie, we used a wide range of shots as well as having a superb storyline compared to our preliminary as well as our handling of the camera improved.
Throughout the beggining of the Media course of filming I felt as if I learnt the basics of filming like shot reverse shot and high angle or low angle. As well as controlling the camera badly when it came to filming, when recording a production my hand used to shake whilst handling the camera, and I also believe that our ideas was also not that good to a standard we should of actually produced.
As the months progressed I began to learn new techniques I was able to add such techniques as sounds, tranistions, as well as a title sequence. Also my editing skill improved dramtically due to the fact that I began to use many softwares such as Soundtrack Pro, Livetype and Final Cut Pro.
Below is our latest movie production.

During this As Media Studies course we have used various different types of equipment, programs and forms of social media.
During this As Media Studies course we have used various different types of equipment, programs and forms of social media.
For my media production we used a various type of softwares, such as Livetype, Soundtrack Pro and Final Cut Pro, all these softwares link to one another, such as importing sound from Soundtrack pro and then inserting words from Livetype and then importing all of them on to Final cut pro and then editing out the scenes we don't need or adding any possible transactions.
We used a memory card to save our work on the memory card, we then inserted the memory card on to a USB and then stuck it on to a computer to continue editing our work. We also used a hardrive to save our work as well as to start the work.
Below is a montage of different equipments we used, this was done in Wordle.

Question 4 & 5
Our film can be promoted in various ways. The most popular video sharing site, YouTube, has helped platform low budget videos into the limelight. For example Fede Alvarez's Video which cost a mere $300 dollars to make, helped him earn a $30,000,000 contract with a major production company. This is just one of the major success stories which has been achieved by using free video sharing websites such as YouTube.
Furthermore, a very social network called Facebook is used by a very large amount of people, this means that anything posted up on Facebook, will be seen by many.
Our group decided to post up our video on both sites, in order to gain as much recognition as possible.
Our video on youtube...
The reaction our video got after we posted it up on Facebook...

Question 4/5
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience?
OrangeMedia is also a low budget production company so we have to find means of advertising that are not mainstream ideas. This would primarily be the internet. The internet is used to advertise most small independent media production, marketing and attracting an audience (target audience). Sites like Youtube, Vimeo and Facebook can be used to show adverts create webpages and web roll-overs, and also mini trailers. After putting it on all these marketing sites we hope to get some sort of recognition so that hopefully we can make some money and eventually make 200 DVDs to sell to the public.
Vimeo; where all the AS students media products have been uploaded.
Youtube; where candiasmedia uploaded my thriller opening. As you can see we also got 127 views on utube as well as a positive comment.
Facebook; Here is where I uploaded my video on to Facebook, we got 20 likes in total, this means that a majority of the people liked watching it, also we got some nice positive comments, telling us how they felt of the video.
The Screen On The Green; where on the 5th, April,2011 all AS students thriller opening was released for a once in a life time opportunity.
Institutions that may distribute my media product are;

Below is a student movie called Panic Attack 2
Question 2
Our film represent social groups because the characters in our film are representing modern day people.
The target audience for our film is teens. This is shown by the mise en scene in our film. The characters wear street attire that any teen nowadays would be seen wearing. The killer in our film is wearing a new era cap with a black jacket on top, this is normal and is seen everyday in society, however the way the outfit is used, gives the viewer the hint that this characters is hiding something sinister, which is shown later on.
The victim in our film represents what would now be seen as a 'vulnerable geek'. This is shown through his attire of a chequered shirt and dull haircut.
These clothing attires are used effectively to draw in the viewer in many ways. The fact that they are both wearing everyday clothing, allows the viewer to be placed in the victims shoes. This draws a lot of empathy for the victim when he gets killed later on.
The following picture shows the gulf in class between the killer and victim. The stereotypical view of the victim is that they are well dressed and usually appear to come from a wealthy background, whereas the killer always appears shabby and seems to come from a poorer background.
The VICTIM (from our film AND a real film):

Evaluation What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Within this question we have to think about how we would advertise and distribute, and how do we apply this in order to attract a good target audience. Ways we could attract an audience could be through advertising. However we have to take into account that we are Candi studios are a low budget company with good equipment and facilities. OrangeMedia is also a low budget production company so we have to find means of advertising that are not mainstream ideas. This would primarily be the internet. The internet is used to advertise most small independent media production, marketing and attracting an audience (target audience). Sites like youtube and twitter and Facebook can be used to show adverts create webpages and web roll-overs, and also mini trailers. There is also shared screenings, dvd releases of the film, candi website adverts, blogs and pop ups independent film festivals, adverts on student union websites maybe ads in local newspapers or on posters and flyers.

Question 4 & 5
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
here is an example of a cheaply developed movie, it has over 6 million views on youtube and has allowed the film producer to earn himself a contract!
he used youtube to help distribute his film over the net...which we also did in several ways
youtube
facebook
vimeo
Evaluation - Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups
The social group our movie is aimed at is for teenagers as of the ages of 16-19 year olds, this is because our 'victim' is presented as a typical teenager, through his clothing the audience we determined that the audience will be able to relate to him a lot easier and also be affected when we see him as being 'watched' and then murdered.
Below is a clip from our thriller opening showing our main character/ victim and from The Mummy Returns showing a kid, both the characters are wearing smart clothing, therefore showing class issues between the victim and the attacker.
in the same way we used 'stereotypes' to emphasise the attacker's motives towards the audience without having to explain much, we used this 'stereotype' to play on the audience's fears and get them involved into the opening!
Below is a screenshot of our 'attacker' and a similar attacker from Kidulthood.
Evaluation Who would be the audience for your media product
Tony,19 is engineering student in university, loves going to the cinema to see action genres, like to wear expensive clothes, spends money on cigarette and likes going out for a drink with friends.
As you can see from these photos, there are stuff as play station console, phones uses like blackberry and iphone, headphones, watches and many more. These are commonly what our target would likely to watch our movie.

Evaluation - Question 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups
The social group our movie aims for is teenagers as of the regions of 16-19 year olds, due to the fact that the victim is wearing modern day clothings, and teenagers can relate to this.
Below is a clip from our production and Taking of Pelham 123, both the characters are wearing modern day clothings.
As you can see both the characters are wearing modern day clothing and acting normal, to what a normal civilian would do.
EVALUATION: Question 1 - Forms and Conventions of title thriller sequence
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
In our production, we used our title sequence with great purpose as it is to capture the true genre of film we're trying to aim for. (suspense/mystery thriller)
The intertextuality between our title sequence is similar to many other productions.
We followed each code and convention, below is the intertextuality of our thriller and the taking of pelham 123
On the left is our production and on the right is taking of pelham 123, as you can see for both productions the associates are shown from an angle where you can see the location of the films.
of the title.
On the left is our production and on the right is taking of pelham 123, when the main actors are shown you don't get to see their faces as its focused on something else.
