Our prelim was was what was expected of us, a few basic angles such as reverse shots and cut-scenes and a basic soundtrack. This was because we had not managed to cover what we were going to learn about the programs of editing.

The angles of our prelim wasnt quite right as we left too much space above my head, this wasnt the right thing to do because a typical shot should have the character in three quarters of the frame. however it was only a few weeks into the media course, thus we didnt know how to film in a professional manner.

However in the final edit of shatter, we put all our skills together to create a masterpiece. Our final film included all our skills which we learnt. This means we added titles using livetext, sound using soundtrack pro and the cutscenes using final cut.

Question 4 & 5

Our film can be promoted in various ways. The most popular video sharing site, YouTube, has helped platform low budget videos into the limelight. For example Fede Alvarez's Video which cost a mere $300 dollars to make, helped him earn a $30,000,000 contract with a major production company. This is just one of the major success stories which has been achieved by using free video sharing websites such as YouTube.

Furthermore, a very social network called Facebook is used by a very large amount of people, this means that anything posted up on Facebook, will be seen by many.

Our group decided to post up our video on both sites, in order to gain as much recognition as possible.

Who would be the audience for our media product?

Our film represent social groups because the characters in our film are representing modern day people.

The target audience for our film is teens. This is shown by the mise en scene in our film. The characters wear street attire that any teen nowadays would be seen wearing. The killer in our film is wearing a new era cap with a black jacket on top, this is normal and is seen everyday in society, however the way the outfit is used, gives the viewer the hint that this characters is hiding something sinister, which is shown later on.

The victim in our film represents what would now be seen as a 'vulnerable geek'. This is shown through his attire of a chequered shirt and dull haircut.

These clothing attires are used effectively to draw in the viewer in many ways. The fact that they are both wearing everyday clothing, allows the viewer to be placed in the victims shoes. This draws a lot of empathy for the victim when he gets killed later on.

The following picture shows the gulf in class between the killer and victim. The stereotypical view of the victim is that they are well dressed and usually appear to come from a wealthy background, whereas the killer always appears shabby and seems to come from a poorer background.

EVALUATION: Question 1 - Forms and Conventions of title thriller sequence

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media  products?

In our film, we used our title sequence effectively to draw more emphasis on the genre of the film (suspense /mystery thriller) .

The intertextuality between the title sequence used is also used in many other films we have used.

Our titles/credits, slowly fade in, this draws more suspense as it resembles what is actually happening in the film (the killer slowly appearing).

However, our titles appear rapidly to add to the emphasis of the 'thriller' effect. 

On the left you can see the production company name of our company, whereas on the right, you can see the production company name of Pelham 123. Both of these are similar to each other because the title comes over a landscape shot of the environment.

On the left you can see our film title 'Shatter'. The effect of the titles are that it slowly fades in and crumbles towards the floor, to show effect that the glass is breaking, thus resembling a glass falling to the floor and breaking. The titles of Pelham 123 appear very fast, resembling a fast moving object, in this case, a moving train.

On the left our credits appear on our film, the names slowly fade in and fade out, to resemble the killer in our film. Whereas the credits on Pelham 23 appear very fast to build up suspense and to add to the frantic atmosphere which is already created by the amount of people rushing in the background.

Rough cut with sound

This is our rough cut of our media production. We edited the scenes and added a soundtrack in to the production, but we still need to add the title sequence in to it, this is currently being in the making.

 

Editing Soundtrack

Here the group edited the soundtrack. We used an instrumental from Youtube, but we made sure that it was Copyright free, so we're enable to add it on to our production. Abid and Fuzail originally found the soundtrack, but Nahid and Viet thought we should alter the soundtrack so it fits perfectly in to our film.


Below are images of the whole group editing the soundtrack in how we wanted it, adding numerous amounts of effects to make it look more professional.

mise en scene: PLANNING

At first, we decided to go to Abid's house to film but the location seemed quite very far, it would take averagely an hour on the bus, we then decided to go to Nahid's house but that was also far for the liking of the team members.

Therefore we decided not to film there. However after turning down the chance to film in Nahid and Abid's house we had no other location to film so Fuzail decided we should film in his house. It would only take 30 minutes to get there from college and it was a great place to film.

Title sequence for Shatter -IDEA

This is an idea of how we wanted our title sequence to look like. This was taken from Youtube, and was designed by somebody completely random.

As you can see since the title of our film production is called "Shatter" and this clip shatters, we wanted it to look like this as much possible.

Opening To Title Sequence

During our editing, we considered many options on what to put as our opening to the film. Some suggested that we place professional openings which are used by world class movie makers..

However, we decided not to use any of them big companies, as the audience will think that the film was made by a big Hollywood company and had a big film budget, but it obviously wasn't. So then we decided to use the CANDIStudios opening, this is also available to everyone that is doing Media.

Evaluation Of Rough Cut

We edited all our scenes into one rough cut video.

Upon viewing this rough cut, we noticed the following problems which we had to address:

• The slight jerking of the camera on the first scene of the house.
• The scenes dragged on for too long.
• The clip of the knocking had to be in sync with the sudden movement of Nahid's head.
• The book reading scene had to have the clock moving in the background to give the effect of a long time period.

Apart from these problems, the use of the glass breaking in slow motion was highly rated by those that viewed it. Also the blood scene in which blood pours out of Nahid's mouth was seen as successful in tricking the viewers into thinking that actual blood was appearing from his head.

Second Day Of Filming

On the 2nd day of filming, all of our group were available, including the actor who was playing the killer.

We assembled early in college, took the equipment and made our way to Fuzail's house again. Upon arriving, we started to film our knocking scene as it was a race against time due to the sunlight decreasing. The lack of light would mean a complete failure in mise en scene.

We made Viet do the knocking wearing black McKenzie glove, as he was so persistent to do some form of acting. Note: Fuzail filming.

After the knocking scene, Abid went to the kitchen to create the fake blood using Golden Syrup and Red food colouring.

After finishing the making of the blood, we started to break the glass for our final scene. Nahid put the fake blood in his mouth and slowly let it pour out whilst lying on the floor to make the dramitic effect of blood gushing out of his head.

First Day Of Filming

On the first day of filming, we hired an actor (Jakir) to act as the killer in our film. Fuzail, Viet and Nahid arrived in college at 1pm and waited for a few minutes for the actor to arrive, which he soon did. Then Abid called the rest of the group to tell them that he was going to arrive at 3pm as he had an exam to go to.

So then the 4 people of the group went to the media equipment office and took out a tripod and video camera for the filming.

After this, they got on a bus and went to Fuzail's house which is located in Hackney. We had to keep close attention to the equipment as we were taught to, but more because the area where he lives, was known for  robberies and theft.

When we arrived at his house, immediately we put our bags down and set up the tripod in the living room to get started with the first scene of our film.

Throughout the day, we managed to film:

• The book scene
• The setting scene of the house from outside
• The Drinking scene
• The scene of Nahid walking to the kitchen
• Jakir appearing in the background of the scenes

Overall i believe it was a very successful first day of filming as it taught us how we should carry out the rest of the film.

Planning - Soundtrack

As a group we sat down and discussed which type of sounds we should have in our film.

At first we played around with the idea of including music from other films, but this idea was soon shattered by our teacher, who said that we couldn't add copyrighted music into our film.

We then looked for music which wasn't copyrighted, but to no avail as hardly any of the songs mentioned if they were copyright protected, thus we couldn't take the risk.

Then we decided that we would add relevant sounds into the film as we go along. This meant that there wouldn't be a specific song throughout the film, but more instruments and actual sounds of things in our film, such as the sound of glass breaking and etc.


Below is the instrumental we're going to use in our film production. However we decided to alter the original music, so we can add our marks on to the soundtrack.

Below are two instrumentals that we found and thought we should use in our film production. They both fit in to our film as a whole.

Planning - Title Style

In our planning of the film, we decided to attempt to make the credits slowly fade into the bottom of the screen as the film is playing. This would suit our film as it would create the effect that the words are resembling the killer; who also appears slowly out of nothing.

We also decided to make the actual film title 'Shatter' appear in the form of broken glass. This is suitable with our film as the glass shatter scene would be placed in the end, and would go greatly with the title next to it in the form of broken glass.
